Role Summary

To operate the data centre on a day-to-day basis from a technical perspective.

Key Responsibilities

Carries out agreed operational procedures. Contributes to the implementation of maintenance and installation work. Identifies operational problems and contributes to their resolution.

Investigates problems in systems and services. Assists with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures.
Develops, documents and implements changes based on requests for change. Applies change control procedures.

Receives and handles requests for support following agreed procedures. Responds to requests for support by providing information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocates unresolved calls as appropriate. Maintains records and advises relevant

Contributes to the availability management process. Analyses service and component availability, reliability, maintainability and serviceability. Ensures that services and components meet and continue to meet all of their agreed performance targets and service levels. Implements arrangements for disaster recovery and documents recovery procedures. Conducts testing of recovery procedures.

Monitors service component capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures. Applies techniques to modify demand for a particular resource or service.
Assesses and analyses release components. Provides input to scheduling. Ensures release processes and procedures are maintained.

Undertakes routine installations and de-installations of items of hardware and/or software. Documents details of all hardware/software items that have been installed and removed so that configuration management records can be updated.

Reviews system software updates and identifies those that merit action. Tailors system software to maximise hardware functionality. Installs and tests new versions of system software. Investigates and coordinates the resolution of potential and actual

Uses database management system software and tools to investigate problems and collect performance statistics and create reports. Carries out routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products.

Performs regular high-performance, scalable backups and restores on a schedule and tracks offsite storage. Carries out documented configuration for allocation of storage, installation and maintenance of storage system as per the agreed operational procedure.


  • Essential Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of supporting VMware and vSphere.
  • Working knowledge of Server Performance Monitoring and Analysis of Windows and additionally Linux environments
  • Experience of administrating XenApp, XenDesktop, Citrix Provisioning Servers. · Knowledge of TCP/IP and associated protocols.
  • Knowledge and experience of current Windows server operating environments, Active Directory and Group Policy.

Desirable Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of load balancing technologies.
  • Knowledge of DBA aspects of MS SQL.
  • Experience of administering the infrastructure of websites and web applications.
  • Knowledge of load balancing technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of supporting DELL Compellent SAN storage and MDS fibre SANs, Juniper iSCSi SANs, EMC Networker, EMC Data Domain and EMC Atmos cloud storage, tape less back up methodology, VMware, vSphere.
  • Knowledge of McAfee and Microsoft antivirus products.

  • ITIL Service Management Foundation certification (or equivalent)
