The defence secretary, Philip Hammond, has confirmed the deaths of two British soldiers in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province in Afghanistan. Details are yet to be confirmed as investigations into the attack continue, but it is thought that a man in Afghan military dress opened fire on the soldiers at a Nato base before being shot and killed himself
